What this page is for
US passport photos are square: 2 x 2 inches in print, and a square digital photo for online renewal. This page crops your photo to that square, lets you line up your head and eyes with the guides, and saves a JPG in the allowed size range.
It crops and resizes only. It does not retouch, smooth, brighten or change the background, because the State Department forbids altered photos.
The rule: US Department of State
Print photos are 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm), with the head 1 to 1 3/8 inches from chin to top of head, on a plain white or off-white background, taken within the last 6 months.
For online renewal the file must be JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC or HEIF and between 54 KB and 10 MB. The State Department says not to change your photo with software, apps, filters or AI. Cropping to the frame is expected; their own upload step crops too.
This page covers US passports only. Other countries use other sizes, such as 35 x 45 mm.
Worked example
Phone photo, 3024 x 4032, 2.8 MB. Zoom to about 1.3 and nudge up until your eyes sit in the shaded band and your face fills the oval.
Result: a 600 x 600 px JPG of roughly 100 to 200 KB, inside the 54 KB to 10 MB range.
How to use it
- Take the photo against a plain white or off-white wall, facing the camera, even light, no glasses.
- Tap Choose a photo.
- Use Zoom, Left / right and Up / down until your eyes are in the shaded band and your head fills the oval.
- Tap Make passport photo.
- Download, and check it against the State Department rules before submitting.

Will this photo be accepted?
This page only handles size and crop. Acceptance depends on lighting, expression, background, glasses and head size, which it cannot judge. Check the State Department rules before submitting.
600 or 1200 pixels?
600 x 600 matches 2 x 2 inches at 300 dpi and is inside the online size range. 1200 x 1200 is sharper if you are printing it.
Can I print it?
Yes. Print the 600 x 600 file at exactly 2 x 2 inches. Many print shops sell a 4 x 6 print you can trim.
Does cropping count as editing?
Cropping to the frame is expected. Retouching, filters and background replacement are not allowed, and this page does none of them.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. It is cropped in your browser.
