What this page is for
Discord refuses an attachment that is even one byte over your limit, and a phone video passes that limit within seconds. This page re-encodes the clip at the bitrate that fits your cap, using the video encoder already built into your browser.
It is for clips you want to drop straight into a channel or a DM, playing inline, without sending people to a link somewhere else.
The rule: Discord's upload cap
Discord's own help centre puts the free upload limit at 20 MB as of August 2026, up from 10 MB. Nitro Basic raises it to 50 MB and Nitro to 500 MB. The limit is per file and is checked the same way on desktop and mobile.
We treat 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes and aim about 7 percent under the cap. Encoders overshoot, and a file at 20.1 MB is rejected as surely as one at 40.
Worked example
45 second iPhone clip, 1080p, 95 MB. Against the 20 MB free cap the total budget is about 3.3 Mbps.
Audio takes 96 kbps, video gets about 3.2 Mbps, and the page picks 720p because 1080p at that bitrate looks worse than a clean 720p.
Result: an MP4 near 18.5 MB, under the cap with room to spare.
How to use it
- Pick your limit. Use 20 MB unless you pay for Nitro.
- Tap Choose file and select the video. MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV work.
- Optional: enter a number of seconds to keep only the start of a long clip.
- Tap Compress for Discord and keep the tab open until the bar finishes.
- Download the file and drop it into Discord.
Questions
Why does Discord still say my file is too large?
Check which limit applies to you. Free accounts are capped at 20 MB. If you chose a Nitro option without Nitro, pick 20 MB and run it again, and make sure you upload the downloaded copy, not the original.
Does this work on iPhone?
Safari 16.4 and later include the video encoder this page needs, so short clips work. Long or 4K clips can run out of memory in Safari because the whole file is held in the browser. If the tab reloads, trim the clip in Photos first or use a computer.
Why did I get a WebM file instead of MP4?
Some browsers, including many Linux builds of Chromium, cannot encode H.264. The page then falls back to WebM, which Discord plays inline. Chrome, Edge and Safari on phones and most computers produce MP4.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The page loads its code once and does the encoding on your device. The file never leaves it.
How long a video can fit in 20 MB?
About two minutes still looks reasonable at 540p. Past that, quality drops quickly. If a clip cannot fit at a watchable quality, the page says how many seconds would fit and you can trim to that.
What happened to the 8 MB limit?
Discord used 8 MB for years, raised it to 25 MB in 2023, cut it to 10 MB in 2024 and raised it to 20 MB in August 2026. Guides and bots written for older limits are still around; the 8 MB page covers them.

Sizes and results are estimates produced by your own browser. A file that fits the cap is not a guarantee that the destination will accept it: services change their limits, and some check more than size. On iPhone and iPad, Safari limits memory and codecs, so large files can fail there that work on a computer. Keep your original file.
