Why Discord Rejected My File
The usual reasons Discord refuses an upload, in the order they happen, and the fix for each.
1. The file is over your upload cap
By far the most common reason. Discord's help centre states the free limit is 20 MB as of August 2026 (it was 10 MB before that). Nitro Basic allows 50 MB and Nitro 500 MB. The cap is per file, and it is the same on desktop and mobile.
A 20.2 MB file fails exactly like a 200 MB one. The fix is to make the file smaller, not to retry. For video, the Discord video compressor sizes the clip to your cap. For GIFs, use the GIF compressor with the 20 MB option.
2. Your phone says the file is smaller than Discord thinks
Some apps show sizes in mebibytes, where 20 MB means 20,971,520 bytes, and others in megabytes of 1,000,000 bytes. A file that looks like 19.8 MB in one place can be over the line in another. Aim for comfortably under the cap; every tool on this site targets about 7 percent below it.
3. You do not have permission to attach files in that channel
Server admins can turn off the Attach Files permission per channel or per role. When that happens the upload button disappears or the upload is refused, whatever the size. Try another channel, or ask a moderator.
4. A bot or AutoMod removed it
Many servers run bots or AutoMod rules that delete certain file types, links or content right after posting. If the file appears and then vanishes, that is usually a server rule rather than a Discord limit.
5. It uploaded, but the video will not play
Discord plays common formats such as H.264 MP4 and WebM inline. Other formats, including many HEVC .mov files from iPhones, can upload fine and then show as a file to download instead of a player. Converting to H.264 MP4 fixes it; the MOV to MP4 page does that.
6. The upload was interrupted
A large file on a weak mobile connection can time out partway through. A smaller file uploads faster and is less likely to fail, which is another reason to compress before sending.

Not as an attachment. Compress it under 20 MB, or upload it to a storage service and share the link.
Why does my video show as a file instead of playing?
The format is probably not one Discord plays inline, often HEVC from an iPhone. Convert it to H.264 MP4.
